The Boycott Israel Network (BIN) sent out the following press release earlier today:
Palestine human rights campaigners today welcomed news that the UK’s fifth biggest food retailer, The Co-operative Group, will “no longer engage with any supplier of produce known to be sourcing from the Israeli settlements”.
The 30th of March marks the annual commemoration of Land Day. It is a day of mourning–for loss of land, a continuing history of dispossession and ethnic cleansing, and for those lost in the struggle to resist. On this day in 1976 in response to the Israeli government’s plan to expropriate thousands of dunams of Palestinian owned land, a general strike and marches were organized in towns from the Galilee to the Negev. These non-violent actions were brutally surprised by Israeli police and army. Six demonstrators were killed and about one hundred were injured–hundreds of others were arrested.
This year, we honor them while we honor the burgeoning Boycott, Divestment & Sanctions Movement. BDS, also a form of non-violent direct action, address the central issue of land as more and more homes are demolished or taken over by Israeli settlers not only in the Occupied Territories, but within “Israel-proper.”
SUPER UW joined a coalition of other Seattle organizations to commemorate Land Day in Seattle’s downtown consumer hub. A large group including a marching band demonstrated at Westlake park and marched to Nordstrom, Macy’s, and Bed Bath & Beyond demanding that these stores stop carrying Ahava Cosmetics and Sodastream Home Carbonation Systems–both products made in illegal Settlements on expropriated Palestinian land.
In Macy’s, Land Day participants staged a deshelving action. Entering the store, close to 15 prospective shoppers surrounded the Ahava display Mic-checked: “Boycott Israeli Goods. Ahava is a product of Israeli Apartheid.” and left the store singing. The incredibly busy first floor of the department store went silent to listen to the message.
The day was a mixture of celebratory action and mournful reflection.

UMass Boston Student Senate passes resolution calling for divestment from Boeing. Citing Boeing’s involvement in Israel’s Operation Cast, student-led coalition demands divestment from Boeing and other companies profiting from war crimes and human rights violations.
At our last meeting, four of the Progressive UW candidates for ASUW visited to speak to us about their plans for promoting democracy, transparency, and financial accountability to the students. Bill Dow (running for Vice President), Orion Donovan-Smith (running for Programming) Ada Waelder (running for University Affairs), and Brian Moe (runing for Policy & Procedures) were articulate, well prepared, and have a clear plan to represent student interests to the Provost Advisor Commity for Students (PACS) and to continue building connections between students and Registered Student Organizations, as well as to actively contribute to bringing progressive groups together for more events. These values and promises for action are in close alignment with the purpose of Students United for Palestinian Equal Rights; we are committed to working together with other groups to educate and bring awareness about the situation in Palestine and the Boycott, Divest, Sanction movement in America and around the world. Responsible spending of student dollars is crucial, and we support their work to bring students together democratically. These candidates are well versed in the workings of ASUW, and it is our pleasure to endorse them. We encourage all UW students to speak with them about their vision, and to vote for them during election May 7th-9th.
